Did you know that the battery is one of the most important parts of a vehicle? It manages a massive range of tasks and devices, from starting the engine to powering in-car computers. Auto shops report that flat or damaged batteries are one of the top causes for roadside assistance calls. The batteries are simply too old for the job they’re performing.

After four or five years, most car batteries will be almost completely unreliable. Even with proper maintenance, many car batteries will become inefficient within three years of everyday use in normal conditions. Cold weather puts a two-fold strain on the battery by reducing its power output (up to 50% at 20 degrees F) and increasing the amps needed to crank a cold engine (up to double the amps at 20 degrees F).

Many driveability and starting problems may be due to low battery voltage. Other items that should always be inspected and may need to be replaced include battery cables, anti-corrosion washers for the battery terminals, battery tray and/or battery hold-down hardware and clamps.

The vehicle's charging system should also be checked to make sure it is operating correctly and is capable of keeping the battery at full charge. If an alternator is overloaded, it may overheat and fail, causing the battery to run down and go dead. Symptoms of a charging problem include a low battery, dim headlights, hard starting or a charging system warning light.

Here are a few issues to consider if it’s time for a car battery replacement:

  • Auto electrical system. Features that have significant power demands, like headlights, may not function as well as they should.
  • Power drain. Many new cars have powerful computers that are operating all the time, even when the vehicle is parked and switched off. These computers can draw energy from your car’s battery at a slow, steady rate, wearing it down over time.
  • Frequent battery inspections. Your battery could go from 90% performance to 20% over the course of a few months.
  • Stop-start technology. Cars with stop-start technology place a greater strain on their batteries than standard vehicles, and often need a special battery.

Note to Remember: The price of a car battery replacement is worth the cost to avoid the stress of a roadside breakdown.
